The Story Behind the Name: Lake Ontario

The word Ontario is derived from the Huron (Wyandot) language, believed to mean "great lake" or "shining waters" — a fitting tribute to one of the most majestic bodies of freshwater on earth.

European explorers first encountered Lake Ontario in the early 17th century. French explorer Samuel de Champlain is credited as one of the first Europeans to document the lake in 1615, recording its vast, shimmering expanse during his travels through the region guided by Indigenous peoples who had called these shores home for thousands of years.

The lake's name was formally established through colonial mapping and trade routes. In 1867, when Canada was born as a nation, the province that shares the lake's name — Ontario — became one of its founding pillars.
